Female Youth Looking Good Coming Out of Pan American Games

July 23, 2007  WHILE the United States delivered strong showings across the board at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, a particular threesome, including one Middle Atlantic swimmer provided considerable promise for the future: Kathleen Hersey, Teresa Crippen and Caitlin Leverenz. There's a strong chance that at least one of the athletes, perhaps all three, will be members of the United States squad that competes next summer at the Olympic Games in Beijing.   Crippen, the multi-talented 17-year-old set a Pan American Games record of 2:10.57 en route to winning the gold medal in the 200 backstroke. That victory complemented a silver medal earlier in the competition in the 400 I.M. When the Olympic Trials are held in Omaha next summer, look for Crippen to also make significant noise in the 200 butterfly. Her range is an obvious strength and will provide options at the Olympic Trials.  Crippen became the second member of her family to win gold at the 2007 Pan American Games. Her brother, Fran, won the gold medal in the men’s 10k open water event.

“It was my best time and I finally got a gold medal,” Crippen said. “But to get a best time is all I can ask for.”

Middle Atlantic Swimmers represented include Ian Clark (SSC), Teresa Crippen (GAAC) and Fran Crippen (GAAC/MVN) who won the Men's 10K event on Saturday, will be competing. View the full Team USA Roster here.  The event begins at 7 p.m. local time and features a total of nine preliminary events. Swimming finals begin Tuesday, July 17 with semifinal and final races beginning at 10 a.m. local time. Preliminary races resume Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. local time.

Ellis' story on way to silver screen The trailblazing coach inspires swimmers

April 25, 2006 (from the Philadelphia Inquirer)  Jim Ellis is still living the movie.  As a matter of fact, that's been his motto of late.  "That's what I tell people," Ellis said. "I've been living the dream. I just get up every day and do it."  For 35 years, Ellis has been doing "it" - running the swimming program of the Philadelphia Department of Recreation - and along the way, becoming a trailblazer and national figure in his field. But the name recognition might not be there for those outside the aquatic ranks.  Read More
