Welcome
to the Diversity section of Middle Atlantic Swimming. We are committed
to "increasing the multicultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of
the sport to achieve and foster an inclusive swimming environment that
fosters the growth of swimming at all levels". We push these goals
through events throughout USA swimming, the Middle Atlantic and by
reaching out to the community. Not only is swimming a great sport that
provides amazing experiences and personal enrichment, it's a life saving
skill. If you'd like more information or would like to volunteer to be a

Middle Atlantic Swimming will be holding a Water Safety
Day on Saturday May 12th at the Boys & Girls Club of Camden
County on 2 Dudley Street. This water safety day will be
held by
Middle Atlantic Swimming’s Diversity Committee. Our mission
is to provide opportunities in swimming to the under-represented
and economically disadvantaged youth in the United States. It is
also to create access to swimming and reach out to the
community. The CDC recognizes drowning as the second leading
cause of accidental death for children ages 1-14. Minorities and
those of a lower socioeconomic status drown 4 times more likely
than their white counterparts. Camden is in this high risk area.
This day will reach 72 children from the community. They will be
rotating through six stations that include how to use a life
vest, boat safety, basic swim techniques, water safety
education, reach and assist lifeguard station and a coast guard
station. We also have the participation of Cooper Hospital’s
Safety Kids rep, Sahara Sam’s, Breaking Barriers: an afterschool
rowing organization, and scuba demonstration.
The day will be kicked off by Camden Mayor Dana L. Redd and
Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter. We will have festivities
inside the building for scheduled groups and the festivities
outside the building are open to the community. They include
safety education booths, the Sahara Sambulance, the Camden
Riversharks mascot, the Camden Fire Department, and student
performance groups. We encourage the community to stop by and
join in the festivities and learn a lot about keeping our
children safe this summer. Water Safety Day falls just about two
weeks before area pools open so it’s important to reach out to
the community and have a fun and safe summer.
